#16 Cortland Handles Hartwick, 5-2, to Improve to 11-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Lily Fox (Northport) and freshman Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) each registered two goals and an assist to lead the nationally 16th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 5-2 victory versus Hartwick Wednesday in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 11-0, their best start since opening the 2009 campaign at 19-0. The Hawks, who had won five straight games, fell to 6-3.

Sophomore Madison Rice (Greene/Greene Central) added a goal, and freshman Carolena Purpura (Centerport/Harborfields) collected an assist for Cortland. Senior goalie Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) made two saves.

Sophomore Julie Ruzzi (High Falls/Rondout Valley) and junior Lex Matarazzo (Commack) each tallied a goal for Hartwick with senior Rebecca Peakes (West Chester, PA/Unionville) picking up an assist. Junior goalie Madison Maddocks (Garrison/Walter Panas) turned aside 12 shots, including nine in the first half.

Cortland pressured early, earning multiple penalty corners that led to several quality shots, but Maddocks recorded five saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless through the first 15 minutes of action. Ettere finally broke through 4:50 into the second quarter with a long blast inside the left post for her 15th goal of the season, extending her point-scoring streak to all 11 games this season. Fox scored from the right side of the circle 65 seconds later, and Rice made it a 3-0 game 3:42 before the half with a deflection in front off a penalty corner. Ruzzi answered on a penalty corner 45 seconds later with a long blast through traffic from the top of the circle, and the teams headed to intermission with Cortland holding a 3-1 lead.

Fox notched her second goal of the game and ninth of the season at the 40:55 mark when she converted a penalty stroke. The Red Dragon advantage grew to 5-1 on Ettere's second goal of the game and 16th of the season 1:34 into the fourth quarter as she finished off a shot alone at the left post. Matarazzo completed the scoring at 48:33, sending a shot from the right side of the circle past a diving McGuinness and inside the left post for the 5-2 final.
