#16 Cortland Suffers First Loss, 4-2, at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The New Paltz field hockey team broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of third-quarter goals in defeating nationally 16th-ranked Cortland, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons dropped their first game of the season and fell to 11-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Hawks improved to 9-2 and 3-0.

Freshman Keira Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) continued her streak of scoring in every game this season, notching two goals for Cortland. Freshman Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) registered an assist. Senior goalie Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) stopped 10 shots, while junior Elizabeth Pratt (Saratoga Springs) recorded two defensive saves.

Hannah Ackerman, Julia Cummings and Jessica Ascencao each tallied a goal and an assist for New Paltz with Shannon Bernhardt adding a goal. Goalie Ryan Dowling turned aside seven shots. Ascencao contributed two defensive saves, and Kayla Ahern and Kyra D'Amico each recorded one defensive save.

Bernhardt gave New Paltz the lead 23 seconds into the second quarter with an unassisted goal. Ettere tied the game at the 19:51 mark off Corrigan's assist. After Ascencao put the Hawks ahead, 2-1, at 25:41, Ettere evened the game with her 18th goal of the season just 24 seconds into the third quarter. Cummings answered 2:29 later with the game winner and Ackerman added an insurance goal to make it a 4-2 score. Early in the fourth quarter, D'Amico made a key defensive save on Ettere to hold the lead as the Hawks earned the 4-2 win.
