CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Matthew Stefaniw (Rochester/Eastridge) scored his second goal of the game early in the second overtime as the Brockport men's soccer team defeated nationally 10th-rankd Cortland, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons had their 11-game winning streak snapped, dropping to 11-2-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Golden Eagles improved to 5-5-1 and 1-4.
Senior
Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East) and graduate student
Blake Aronson (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) each netted a goal for Cortland. Graduate student
Lukas Rubio (Liverpool) recorded an assist. Junior goalie
Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) made three saves.
Sophomore Nick Van Wie (Brockport) added a goal for Brockport, while senior Zach Langelotti (Brockport) and junior Seamus Parker (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) collected one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Andrew Taylor (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) turned aside 13 shots.
Ruggiero started the scoring in the seventh minute with his seventh goal of the season. Rubio took a shot that Taylor saved, but Ruggiero was alone at the left post and deposited a shot into the open goal. Stefaniw tied the game in the 24th minute, converting a penalty kick after a Brockport player was pulled down in the box.
In the 55th minute, Aronson notched his team-high ninth goal of the season. After the Golden Eagles failed to clear a loose ball out of danger, Aronson headed a shot in off a Brockport defender to give Cortland a 2-1 lead. Two minutes later, Aronson nearly struck again but Taylor made a diving save on his 20-yard low shot to the far post.
Van Wie tied the game in the 59th minute, finishing off a cross from Langelotti with a one-touch shot at the left post. From that point, each team created multiple chances to break the tie. In the 60th minute, Ruggiero missed just wide left on a header. In the 71st minute, Brockport freshman Warren Banks (Beacon) had an open look in front and sent a shot over the crossbar.
Six minutes later, Ruggiero missed wide left again off a pass from Rubio after a free kick. With 2:30 remaining in regulation, junior Josh Fitzpatrick (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) sent a header just over the crossbar on a Brockport corner kick. With 25 seconds on the clock, Melveney made a diving save on senior Noah Mohamed's (Greece/Greece Olympia) bid from 26 yards on a free kick, and a last-second header by the Golden Eagles barely missed wide right.
In the first overtime, the Red Dragons generated two excellent chances, both by freshman
Matt Shultz (Oneonta). In the 98th and 99th minutes, Taylor denied his open shots from the left side of the box to send the game to the second overtime. The Golden Eagles wasted little time in netting the game winner. Parker carried the ball down the right wing toward the end line and fed a pass in front where Stefaniw one-timed a shot past Melveney just 31 seconds into the second overtime for the 3-2 final.
