Two Wins at Cabrini Tri-Match Push Volleyball Win Streak to 11

RADNOR, PA. – The Cortland women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to 11 matches with victories over Stockton University and Cabrini University in a tri-match at Cabrini. The Red Dragons (16-2) swept Stockton, 25-21, 25-11, 25-15, and overcame a loss in the first set to beat the host Cavaliers, 21-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-22.
 
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) led Cortland with 14 kills versus Stockton. He finished with a .414 attack percentage, committing only two errors in 29 attempts, and she added eight digs and three blocks. Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) added 13 kills and a .321 attack percentage, while Maya Owens (Nyack) put down seven kills with no errors in 15 swings for a .467 hitting percentage.
 
Danielle Fisk (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) contributed four kills and a team-high three aces in the victory. Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) totaled 19 assists and 12 digs, Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) had 12 assists and two aces, Carly Haegele (Commack) rang up a team-high 21 digs, and Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) had nine digs. Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) paced the Red Dragons with six blocks.
 
Charlotte Leon led Stockton (9-12) with eight kills and Sophia Marziello had 11 digs.
 
Cortland finished the match with a .316 team attack percentage while limiting the Ospreys to a .079 percentage. The first set was tied at 20-20, but Cortland scored the next four points on a service error, a Southcott kill, a block by Guedez and Caterina Mangogna (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor), and a Hinshaw ace. Stockton got one point back before a combined block by Guedez and Southcott ended the set.  Cortland went on a 13-1 run in the second set to extend an 11-9 lead to 24-10, and a 6-1 streak in the third pushed a 17-13 lead to 23-14.
 
Three Red Dragons posted double-figure kill totals in the win over Cabrini. Southcott had 18 kills along with 12 digs, Van Pelt finished with 14 kills, and Guedez recorded 10 kills with only one error in 16 attempts for a .562 attack percentage. Mangogna chipped in with nine kills and a .375 hitting percentage and Owens finished with seven kills.
 
Hinshaw and Wittman registered 30 and 24 assists, respectively, with each also serving three aces. Haegele totaled 23 digs, followed by Doorley with 13 and Southcott with 12, while Fisk led the squad with three blocks.
 
For Cabrini (5-13), Hannah Dalton led the way with 17 kills and Sam Heenan added 11 kills and 12 digs. Lexi Conte dished out 26 assists and Gina Custer had 32 digs.
 
Cortland led 20-18 in the first set before the hosts closed on a 7-1 run, including two aces by Custer. The Red Dragons slowly pulled away in the second set, pushing a 14-12 lead to 20-14 and leading by at least four the rest of the set. Cortland took control of the third set with nine straight points that gave the Red Dragons an 18-7 lead. The fourth set was knotted at 14-14 before Cortland scored three of the next four points, and the Red Dragons maintained at least a three-point lead after that.
 
Cortland will return to SUNYAC play next weekend, hosting New Paltz on Friday at 6 p.m. and Oneonta on Senior Day Saturday at 1 p.m. Cortland leads the conference with a 5-0 record and four matches remaining, followed by Fredonia at 6-1 and New Paltz and Geneseo each at 4-1.
