FREDONIA, N.Y. – Cortland led almost the entire contest, but wasn't able to put the game away until the final couple of minutes, as the Red Dragons defeated host Fredonia, 66-60, in a SUNYAC women's basketball matchup. Cortland won its fifth straight game to improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) led Cortland with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also notched three steals and five rebounds.
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) reached a career high in scoring for the second straight night, netting 16 points less than 24 hours after scoring 11 at home versus Brockport. Malone made two 3-pointers, had two assists, and shared the team lead with seven rebounds.
Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) was Cortland's other double-figure scorer with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She made two of her three 3-pointers and added four rebounds.
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) matched Malone with seven rebounds and had two assists, while
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) finished with team bests of three assists and three steals.
Fredonia (6-3, 1-2 SUNYAC) was led by Renee Park's 17 points and six rebounds. She was one of four Blue Devils to score in double figures, followed by Katie Pitcher with 14 points, Lauren Mickley with 11 and Mary Culeton with 10. Pitcher and Isabella Wier each grabbed five rebounds, with Wier also registering four steals.
Cortland led 19-9 after one quarter and 27-13 a couple of minutes into the second quarter, but Fredonia closed back to within two at 33-31 on a Park 3-pointer less than two minutes before halftime.
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) scored the final three points of the quarter for the Red Dragons and the lead was 36-31 at the break.
The Red Dragons' lead fluctuated between two and seven points during the third quarter, and grew as large as 12 at 60-48 after a Miedreich jumper midway through the fourth. But the hosts wouldn't go away, whittling the Cortland lead down to four at 60-56 with under two minutes remaining after two Culeton free throws. McGuire's two foul shots pushed the margin to six and, after Fredonia missed two free throws, Travers hit two from the charity stripe to make it 64-56.
Cortland finished at 42 percent from the floor, while Fredonia shot 43 percent. The Red Dragons hit six 3-pointers, compared to just two for the Blue Devils.
Cortland travels to Geneseo on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. league game.
