GENESEO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's basketball team earned its sixth straight victory and remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 67-60 victory at Geneseo. The Red Dragons improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Knights fell to 4-4 and 1-2.
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) led a balanced Cortland scoring attack with 15 points and added five rebounds. She made three 3-pointers in seven attempts.
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots, and
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) made 4-of-8 3-pointers and ended with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists to the winning effort, while
Sarah Tully (East Aurora) had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Geneseo was led by Mackenzie Reigle's 24 points, 11 rebounds and four assists and Hannah Stockman's 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Stockman made 4-of-7 shots from 3-point distance. Megan Roell added eight rebounds and Taylor Hansen had three assists.
Shooting stats were nearly identical in the contest. Both teams shot 34 percent from the field overall and 33 percent from 3-point range, and both were 9-for-13 from the foul line. Cortland, however, sank 12 3-pointers compared to Geneseo's seven.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half. Cortland led 34-29 at the break and began the third quarter on an 11-4 run, featuring 3-pointers from Tully, Malone and McGuire, to take its largest lead of the night at 45-33. The lead was still 12 at 47-35 with 5:16 left in the quarter before Geneseo scored nine in a row over the next three minutes. Layups from Travers and
Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) closed out the period to put Cortland ahead by seven.
Malone's 3-pointer less than a minute into the fourth quarter gave Cortland a 10-point lead, but Geneseo mounted another rally – this time a 10-0 run on two Stockman treys sandwiched around a pair of baskets by Reigle – and the game was tied at 54-54 with 6:31 remaining.
Cortland, however, never let Geneseo take the lead from that point. The Red Dragons were clinging to a 57-56 lead before a Miedreich 3-pointer with 3:48 left and a Travers layup at the 3:10 mark extended the margin to six. Cortland led by four with 1:26 remaining before Longford made two free throws, and neither team scored again until Travers hit a foul shot with 24 seconds on the clock to help put the game away.
Cortland will play a non-league game at SUNY Poly Sunday at noon in Utica.
