#23 Cortland Drops Season-Opener at #12 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – Jacqui Hallack tallied nine points on seven goals and two assists to lead the nationally 12th-ranked Ithaca women's lacrosse team to an 18-11 win versus 23rd-ranked Cortland Wednesday afternoon in the season-opening game for both teams.

Senior Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led the Red Dragon offense with three goals and one assist. Junior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) also netted three goals, while senior Hannah Tiso (Somers) recorded two goals and one assist and freshman Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) scored the first two goals of her career. Sophomore Kiki Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) added a goal, and senior Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee) chipped in with two assists.

Senior goalie Paige Potter (Cortland) registered 11 saves for Cortland. Lorenzen also recorded three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while sophomore Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) won three draw controls.

Alexa Ritchie added four goals and two assists to help pace the Ithaca offense. Madison Boutureira tallied two goals and two assists, Alexa Rabb score twice and three others each contributed a goal.

Goalie Mackenzie Schade stopped seven shots. Rachel Rosenberg finished with two assists, six ground balls, five draws and five caused turnovers, while Kelly Mehorter caused two turnovers and collected four ground balls.

The first half remained tight throughout as the teams traded the first six goals of the game. Ithaca then netted three goals in a row to go ahead, 6-3, but the Red Dragons closed the gap to 10-8 at the break. The Bombers stretched their lead to 13-8 with three quick goals to open the second half. Cortland cut the lead to 15-11 with 13:40 to play, but Ithaca closed the game with the last three goals for the 18-11 final.
