Defense Rules the Day as #22 Cortland Upends #9 St. John Fisher

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior goalie Paige Potter (Cortland) matched her career high with 14 saves, including 11 in the second half, and the nationally 22nd-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team held ninth-ranked St. John Fisher scoreless over the final 21 minutes, eight seconds of the game to earn a 6-3 victory in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.

Offensively, the Red Dragons (4-1) were led by junior Hannah Keech's (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) three goals. Freshman Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) tallied one goal and one assist, and seniors Hannah Tiso (Somers) and Emily Goebel (Penfield) each netted a goal. Senior Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee), junior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and sophomore Kiki Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) recorded one assist apiece.

Senior Kayla Petre (Hauppauge) caused three turnovers and collected two ground balls for the Red Dragons. Keech added three draw controls and two ground balls, while Potter and juniors Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) and Julia Cambria (Farmingdale) each scooped up two ground balls.

Senior Alyssa Sproule (Penfield), junior Brittany Halpin (Syracuse/Liverpool) and sophomore Mackenzie Alexander (Adams/South Jefferson) scored goals for the Cardinals (5-1). Junior Sydney DeGirolamo (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) chipped in with an assist and secured all eight of St. John Fisher's draw controls.

Senior goalie Claudia Mocciaro (Syracuse/West Genesee) registered four saves and two ground balls. Senior Erin Mills (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished with five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Halpin caused three turnovers, Alexander had four ground balls and freshman Shannon Foster (Syracuse/West Genesee) collected three ground balls.

Halpin gave St. John Fisher the lead at 22:26 of the first half with a free-position goal. Keech netted her first goal at 12:04 and Goebel made it a 2-1 game at 7:29. Sproule tied the game at 2-2 at the 6:38 mark before Cashman gave the Red Dragons the lead for good with her goal at 4:49.

Keech scored her second goal of the game 2:02 into the second half, but Alexander answered 6:50 later to pull the Cardinals to within 4-3. Tiso made it a 5-3 score at 9:42, and Keech gave Cortland its largest lead off an assist from Procopio at 3:02. Cortland won the next draw, one of only three in the game for the Red Dragons, and ran off a minute of clock before turning the ball over. Potter then denied Sproule with 58 seconds left and made a late stop on Halpin to seal the 6-3 victory.
