Fast Start Leads to Big Win vs. Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 18th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 14-1 lead at the half en route to an 18-1 victory versus Potsdam in SUNYAC East action Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Bears dropped to 3-6 and 0-5.

Senior Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led 13 Cortland point-scorers with six points on three goals and three assists. Freshman Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) also netted three goals, sophomore Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) tallied two goals and two assists, junior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) contributed two goals and an assist and senior Emily Goebel (Penfield) and junior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) each scored twice.

Senior Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee) and junior Katie Goodrich (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) recorded one goal and two assists, and sophomores Sydney Stamboly (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and Kiki Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) chipped in with one goal apiece. Senior Hannah Tiso (Somers) registered three assists, while sophomore Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and freshman Holly Wright (Huntington) each picked up an assist.

Senior goalie Paige Potter (Cortland) only faced three shots on goal for the Red Dragons, stopping two shots. Cortland dominated the draw controls, winning 19-of-20 in the game, led by Meager with eight. Meduski secured four draws with Lorenzen grabbing three and Hoeffner and Czyz each winning two. Junior Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) caused two turnovers.

Freshman Novaleigh LeGrow (Massena) scored Potsdam's goal. Senior Keira Thacker (Oakville, ON/T.A. Blakelock) and junior Calena Rodriguez (Albany) collected two ground balls each for the Bears.

Sophomore Netta Terrance (Akwesasne/Salmon River) started in goal, making six saves in the first half before giving way to senior Natalie Wasielewski (Carnegie, PA/Chartiers Valley), who stopped six shots in the second half.

The Red Dragons built a 6-0 lead 7:34 into the game as Lorenzen scored all of her three goals during the stretch. LeGrow ended the goal string at the 19:20 mark, but Cortland closed the half on an 8-0 run with two goals each coming from Cashman and Janis for a 14-1 lead at the break. In the second half, the Red Dragons slowed the pace of play, routinely working down the shot clock on most possessions. Hoeffner, Procopio, Meduski and Goebel each scored for the 18-1 final.
