Cortland Holds on for 14-12 Win vs. Oneonta in SUNYAC East Game

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 17th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team scored three of the game's final four goals to break an 11-11 tie in earning a 14-12 victory versus Oneonta Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC East action at the Stadium Complex. The host Red Dragons improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference and clinched one of two division playoff berths with two games remaining. The visiting Red Dragons dropped to 4-3 overall and in league play.

Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) had a career day offensively for Cortland, totaling a game-high 10 points on a career-best seven goals and three assists. Junior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) scored three goals, senior Emily Goebel (Penfield) tallied two goals and one assist and senior Hannah Tiso (Somers) and sophomore Kiki Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) each netted a goal. Senior Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee) collected four assists, while junior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) added two assists.

Senior goalie Paige Potter (Cortland) registered 10 saves for the host Red Dragons. Lorenzen secured eight draw controls, and Meager and junior Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) each won four draws. Senior Kayla Petre (Hauppauge) scooped up six ground balls and caused two turnovers, Lorenzen chipped in with fur ground balls and two caused turnovers and Squillini caused two turnovers.

Sophomore Megan Foiles (Pearl River) led the Oneonta offense with four goals. Senior Deirdre Buckley (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) notched three goals, senior Christen Patalano (Mineola/Kellenberg Memorial) tallied two goals and one assist and junior Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia) contributed one goal and two assists. Senior Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem) and junior Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem) each scored a goal.

Sophomore goalie Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place) turned aside 13 shots. Senior Haley Vermette (Brewster/North Salem) recorded five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Morris won five draws and Foiles secured three draws.

The game stayed close throughout with Cortland taking a 7-6 lead at the half. The host Red Dragons eventually built an 11-8 advantage with 16:25 remaining, but Oneonta chipped away to tie the game at 11-11 at the 8:03 mark. Goebel gave Cortland back the lead for good at 6:27, and Lorenzen's seventh goal of the game at 5:13 put Cortland ahead 13-11. Buckley pulled Oneonta to within 13-12 at the 4:16 mark, but Squillini won the ensuing draw control that led to Tiso's goal at 3:09 for a 14-12 Cortland lead.

Foiles secured the following draw, and the two teams traded turnovers leading to a possession and a successful Oneonta clear. The visiting Red Dragons then turned the ball over, and Cortland called a timeout with 1:57 on the clock. Oneonta forced a quick turnover after play restarted and worked a good clear. With 1:07 to play Hughes took an uncontested shot that Potter denied in close. Cortland cleared the ball and burned off nearly the rest of the clock to seal the win.
