Cortland Starts Fast in 21-5 Win vs. Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team held Oneonta scoreless for the first 41 minutes, 46 seconds of the game in building a substantial lead on its way to a 21-5 victory in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The host Red Dragons improved to 6-3 with the win, while the visiting Red Dragons dropped their first game of the season, falling to 4-1.

Junior Dante Yacavone (Homer) scored a game-high six points on four goals and two assists to lead the Cortland offense. Freshman Colton Smith (Naples/Penn Yan Academy) finished with five points on a season-best four goals and one assist, and junior Troy Morris (Long Beach) also netted four goals.

Junior Pat Doyen (Miller Place) tallied two goals and two assists, sophomore Matthew Thrasher (Vestal) scored twice, and sophomores Connor Leonard (Syracuse/Henninger) and Sean Barrett (Lynbrook) each contributed one goal and one assist. Senior Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) and junior Kyle Boden (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River) netted one goal apiece, and freshman Colin Peers (Fairport) notched his first career goal.

Junior goalie Marc Esposito (West Babylon) made seven saves and recorded an assist through the first three quarters for Cortland. Freshman Evan Alfano (Webster/Webster Schroeder) stopped one shot in the fourth quarter. Senior Brian Williams (Holtsvile/Sachem East) won 6-of-10 faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls. Senior Carter Baron (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) and sophomore Jake DiBenedetto (Lynbrook) each won four faceoffs.

Senior Thomas Fay (Nanuet), sophomores Sam Haita (Stephentown/La Salle Institute), David Guest (Niskayuna) and Connor Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) and freshman Luke Maslin (Owego/Owego Free Academy) each scored a goal for Oneonta with junior Dean Cannon (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) picking up an assist.

Junior Jordan Berson (Old Bethpage/JFK) started in goal for the visiting Red Dragons, making five saves in the first half. Junior Sebastian Gomez (White Plains) turned aside eight shots in 20:28, freshman Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainedge) registered three saves in 8:39, and freshman Mark Allan (Greenlawn/Harborfields) did not see a shot over the final 53 seconds.

Junior Timothy Shanley (West Hempstead) won 9-of-16 faceoffs and gathered seven ground balls. Sophomore Christian Moreno (Massapequa) collected three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
