Courtney Kane Tosses No-Hitter to Complete Shutout Sweep vs. Plattsburgh

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Courtney Kane (Yaphank/Bellport) tossed a no-hitter as nationally 22nd-ranked Cortland defeated visiting Plattsburgh, 5-0, to complete a sweep of a SUNYAC Eastern Division doubleheader. The Red Dragons (5-1, 2-0) also blanked the Cardinals (2-2, 2-2) in the first game, 4-0, behind a two-hitter from Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central).

Kane is the first Red Dragon to throw a solo, 7-inning no-hitter since Katie Finch's perfect game at Buffalo State in 2010. Cortland last two no-hitters were both 5-inning games in 2019 – one by Cady Walts and the other by current Plattsburgh head coach Sam Van Dorn.

Cortland will host Oneonta in a SUNYAC East doubleheader Monday at 3 p.m. in a makeup from last Thursday.

GAME 1: Cortland 4, Plattsburgh 0

Weeden, now 2-0 on the season, took a no-hit bid two outs into the top of the fifth before allowing a Samantha Gentile single. Frannie Merkel recorded the Cardinals' other hit with a single in the seventh.

Plattsburgh threatened in both the third and fourth innings without a hit. In the third, the Cardinals put runners on second and third with one out after a hit batter, a walk, and a steal on a failed pickoff. Weeden, however, got Alexa Murray to hit a grounder back to her, and both Plattsburgh runners were caught off their bases. Weeden threw to third for a tag out, and a throw to second led to another tag to complete the unconventional double play. In the fourth, a hit batter, walk and wild pitch led to a second-and-third situation with one out, but Weeden got a short flyout to right and a strikeout to end the inning.

Cortland did most of its damage with three runs in the bottom of the third. Gina Meyers (Liverpool) singled and stole second, and Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) drew a walk two batters later. Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) singled to drive in a run, followed by a Lexi Szesnat (Colonie) RBI double to center. The Red Dragons eventually loaded the bases and an error allowed the last run to score.

Meyers also started a rally in the fourth with an infield single and a steal. She advanced to third on Kelly O'Gorman's (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) infield single and scored two batters later on a Cuttita groundout.

Plattsburgh stranded runners on first and third in the fifth, and in the seventh had runners on second and third after a walk, Merkel's single and a bunt. Weeden was able to complete the shutout after inducing a groundout back to the circle.

Weeden finished her two-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks. Plattsburgh starter Julia Golino gave up seven hits and four runs, three earned, with five strikeouts and two walks.

Szesnat and Meyers each finished 2-for-3 and Cuttita was 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Cortland offense.

GAME 2: Cortland 5, Plattsburgh 0

Kane struck out six batters and walked three during her 100-pitch no-hit effort. Plattsburgh also had one batter reach on a hit-by-pitch and two others via errors. The closest the Cardinals came to a hit was in the top of the fifth when Kaitlin Smith hit a short pop-up between the pitching circle and shortstop. Felicello raced in from her shortstop position and made a diving catch for the out.

Despite the no-hitter, the game remained tight until late. Cortland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when O'Gorman reached second on a dropped fly ball, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Cuttita's one-out single. In the fifth, Cuttita doubled with one out and scored on a two-out Jess Miller (Campbell Hall/Goshen) RBI single to left to make it 2-0.

Plattsburgh loaded the bases in the top of the fourth when Murray reached on an error to lead off the inning, Bella Spadinger walked with two outs, and Alexandra Clifford was hit by a pitch. Kane struck out the next hitter to end the threat. In the sixth, Golino reached with two outs on a dropped fly ball and Spadinger walked, but Kane again came through with a strikeout to keep Plattsburgh off the board.

Cortland added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tori Reich (Cornwall) walked with one out and O'Gorman hit a two-out, two-run homer off the scoreboard in left. Felicello followed with a walk and scored on Cuttita's RBI double to center. Kane wrapped up her no-hitter with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, capped by a strikeout.

Cuttita closed the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI and was a combined 4-for-7 with four RBI in the doubleheader. Miller finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, O'Gorman drove in two runs and scored twice, Reich was 1-for-2 with a walk, and Felicello ended 1-for-3 with a walk. Plattsburgh's Kristina Maggiacomo allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks over six innings.
