CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team raced out to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and the Red Dragons cruised past visiting Russell Sage, 12-0, in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night under the lights at the Stadium Complex White Field. Cortland's 12 goals are its most in a game since a 15-0 win over Morrisville State in 2013.
Forward
Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) led the Red Dragons with three goals and three assists. Her nine total points are the most by a Cortland freshman in a single game since at least the 1991 seasons, and possibly in the entire history of the program (records from prior to 1991 are not easily obtainable at this time).

Madison Becker (Moravia) each tallied two goals. Junior

Sidney DeMagistris (Gloversville) notched one assist.
Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) played the first 51 minutes, 43 seconds in goal for the Red Dragons and junior
Fab Adorno Aguila (Orchard Park) played the final eight minutes, 17 seconds. Neither faced a shot on goal. Cortland outshot the Gators, 36-1, and earned all 10 of the game's penalty corners.
Russell Sage's Abigayle Greier started in goal and also played the fourth quarter. She made four saves and allowed eight goals. Anna Church played the middle two quarters in cage and recorded nine saves with four goals allowed.
Pratt got Cortland on the board just 31 seconds into the contest, followed by Rice 42 seconds later. Ettere made it 3-0 with just over five minutes elapsed, and Rice, Becker, Snyder and Becker again closed out the first quarter scoring. The Red Dragons were held scoreless in the second period, but Ettere scored two of the team's four goals in the third period. Corrigan and Snyder each scored once in the third, and Quick closed out the night's scoring with 8:17 left in the fourth.
Cortland returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Montclair State University in New Jersey.
