ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rochester men's soccer team scored a late second-half goal to secure a 1-0 home win versus Cortland Wednesday night in the season-opening game for both teams.
Junior goalie
Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) made three saves for the Red Dragons. Goalie Santino Lupica-Tondo posted the shutout for the Yellowjackets with four saves. Colin Canning scored Rochester's goal off an assist from Santi Ponce Ocampo.
After a tightly played opening half in which the teams combined for just three shots and no corner kick opportunities, the Yellowjackets had an excellent chance to grab the lead just before the midway point of the second half. After a Cortland foul in the box in the 71st minute, Melveney made a save on a Rochester penalty kick to keep the game scoreless.
Canning netted the game-winning goal in the 87th minute with a shot into the left corner after receiving Ocampo's long pass from the right wing. The Red Dragons had one chance less than a minute later to score the equalizer, but Lupica-Tondo made a save on senior
Ian Blugh's (Staten Island/Curtis) header to preserve the Rochester lead.
