ALBANY, N.Y. - The Russell Sage women's soccer team scored a pair of early first-half goals just over five minutes apart and held on for a 2-1 victory over Cortland in the season-opening game for both teams.

Katrina Klammer (Mahopac) scored for the Red Dragons with graduate student
Alannah O'Shea (New Hyde Park/Herricks) collecting an assist. Junior goalie
Kiersten Becker (Guilderland) made one save in her collegiate debut.
Amelia Geesler and Natalie Ricci tallied goals for the Gators. Marissa Key picked up an assist. Kierstin Lynch started in goal, making six saves before giving way to Mickaela Buzzy, who stopped all six shots she faced in the second half.
Geesler put Russell Sage on the scoreboard in the fifth minute, finishing off a corner kick from the right side of the box. The Gators went ahead 2-0 in the 10th minute when Ricci converted a breakaway. Klammer pulled Cortland to within 2-1 in the 15th minute, scoring to the right side of the goal off a corner kick serve from O'Shea.
The Red Dragons controlled most of the play in the game, holding a commanding 18-3 advantage in shots, including an 8-0 edge in the second half. Cortland pressed late for the tying goal but Buzzy made a save on a shot by sophomore Simone Nievel (Syracuse/C.W. Baker) and sophomore
Erica Gangemi (Syracuse/Westhill) missed the goal high in the 89th minute.
