Cortland Fights Back in Singles Play for 5-4 Victory at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Cortland won four singles matches, capped by Vyda Van Denburg's (Kingston) victory at third singles for the decisive team point, as the Red Dragons rallied for a 5-4 win at Brockport in a SUNYAC women's tennis dual match.
 
Cortland improved to 2-1 this fall, both overall and in the SUNYAC. Brockport fell to 2-1 overall and is 0-1 in league play. Cortland will travel to Fredonia Saturday at 11 a.m. for another conference match.
 
Cortland trailed 2-1 after doubles action and was down 4-3 with two singles matches still to be completed Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) won 6-1, 6-4 at first singles to even the team score at 4-4, and Van Denburg gave Cortland the win when she closed out a 6-3, 6-3 victory at third singles.
 
Karlie Cubino (Whitesboro) and Meredith Perine (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) earned Cortland's other two points in singles action. Cubino won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles and Perine was a 6-2, 6-0 winner on the sixth flight. Brockport's singles victories came from Caroline Stewart at second singles, 6-2, 6-4, and Heather Phillips at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-1.
 
The host Golden Eagles started the day with two tight wins in doubles action. At number one, Stewart and Eliza Gonzalez edged Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) and Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois), 8-5, and on the third flight, Samantha and Shannon Aubin went to the wire before beating Katie Barber (Sound Beach/Rocky Point) and Meredith Perine (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), 7-6, after pulling out an 8-6 tiebreaker. Madigan and Van Denburg won easily at second doubles, 8-1.
