FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 9-0 victory at Fredonia in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons are now 3-1 both overall and in league play.
Cortland posted one tight and two convincing victories in doubles action.
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) won 8-1 at second doubles and
Karlie Cubino (Whitesboro) and
Katie Barber (Sound Beach/Rocky Point) won 8-2 at the third flight. At first doubles,
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) and
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) were tied at 7-7 against Gabby Gance and Princess Unita Obi before winning a tiebreaker, 7-3, to claim the 8-7 victory.
Madigan sailed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles and Streety was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at second singles. Van Denburg posted a 6-0, 6-4 win at number three,
Preston Fuerbacher (Rochester/Fairport) won 6-1, 6-4 at the fourth flight, and Cubino recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win at fifth singles.
In sixth singles action,
Meredith Perine (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) lost the first set to Dominique Martello, 6-4, but bounced back to win the second set, also by a 6-4 count. With the team decision already in hand, a super tiebreaker to 10 points was played in lieu of a third set and Perine came out on top, 10-3, to claim the match. Fredonia is now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in SUNYAC play.
Cortland will travel to Alfred University for a non-league match on Friday at 3 p.m.
