ALFRED, N.Y. – Five singles victories, including two three-set affairs, helped Cortland erase a 2-1 deficit after doubles play and the Red Dragons defeated host Alfred University, 6-3, in a non-league women's tennis dual match. Cortland earned its fourth straight win of the season and is now 4-1.
Preston Fuerbacher (Rochester/Fairport) clinched the Red Dragon victory with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at fourth singles and Cortland clinging to a 4-3 lead in the team scoring. Not only did Fuerbacher rally after dropping the first set, but she also trailed, 3-2, in the third set.
Down 2-1 entering singles play, Cortland tied the score when
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. The Saxons regained the lead when Macy Youngberg outlasted
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) at second singles, 6-4, 6-4.
The Red Dragons, however, won the final four singles matches.
Vyda Van Denburg posted a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at number three and
Karlie Cubino (Whitesboro) was victorious 6-4, 6-2 at number five. Following Fuerbacher's team victory-clinching win at fourth singles,
Rachel Sullivan (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) closed out the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number six.
Alfred's (0-5) lead after doubles play came from a pair of 8-6 wins – one by Anna Gwozdz and Youngberg at the first flight over Streety and
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) and the other by Alex Rossen and Isabelle Benoit versus Cubino and
Katie Barber (Sound Beach/Rocky Point) on the third flight. Madigan and Van Denburg earned Cortland's doubles point with an 8-3 win at number two.
