ONEONTA, N.Y. – Cortland led 2-1 after doubles play, but Hartwick won five out of six singles matches – two of them in three sets – as the Hawks defeated the Red Dragons, 6-3, in a non-league women's tennis match.
Cortland had its four-match winning streak snapped and is now 4-2 on the season. Hartwick improved to 4-2 with the win.
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) improved to 5-1 on the season with an 8-3 win at second doubles.
Katie Barber (Sound Beach/Rocky Point) and
Rachel Sullivan (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) won 8-2 at third doubles. Hartwick picked up a point at first doubles with an 8-3 decision by Jade Killikelly and Victoria Wilson.
Cortland's lone singles point came at the number five flight as
Karlie Cubino (Whitesboro) improved to 4-0 this fall with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Jess Sexton. Hartwick, however, pulled out three-set wins at the top two singles levels. Killikelly squeaked past Madigan at number one, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5, while Ryann Ashby was a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 winner over
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) at number two.
The hosts also won a close match at fourth singles when Val Kohberger defeated
Preston Fuerbacher (Rochester/Fairport), 7-5, 6-4. In addition for the Hawks, Wilson was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at third singles and Colleen Marsh won 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
Cortland will host Misericordia in a non-league match on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
