CORTLAND, N.Y. – Visiting Misericordia won tight battles in doubles play and swept all six singles matches in straight sets as the Cougars defeated host Cortland, 9-0, in a non-league women's tennis match.
Misericordia (3-0) won by 8-6 scores at both second and third doubles. Lauren Visalli and Hailey Loughlin trailed 6-3 at second doubles before rallying for the win over
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston), while Cassie Benderavich and Lydia Barbour won at third doubles over
Rachel Sullivan (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and
Katie Barber (Sound Beach/Rocky Point), Cortland's two seniors on the roster. At first doubles, Brianna Pizzano and Emily Brecker won by an 8-4 margin over
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) and
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ).
The tightest singles match was at the fifth flight as Benderavich won 6-2, 6-4 over
Meredith Perine (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker). Pizzano won 6-3, 6-2 at first singles, Brecker was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at second singles, Loughlin won 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, Barbour won 6-2, 6-0 at number four, and Visalli was a 6-1, 6-1 victor at number six.
Cortland (4-3) will host Oswego in a SUNYAC match at noon Saturday. It will be the Red Dragons' final league match during the fall semester; Cortland's other two SUNYAC matches, versus Oneonta and Geneseo, along with the SUNYAC tournament will be held next spring. Cortland also has a non-league home match with Houghton scheduled for next Tuesday.
