Red Dragons Blank Misericordia, 5-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team scored goals in all four quarters in defeating Misericordia University, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 4-0, while the Cougars dropped to 0-3.

Junior Elizabeth Pratt (Saratoga Springs) led Cortland with two goals and one assist. Freshman Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) scored two goals, junior Lily Fox (Northport) registered one goal and one assist and freshman Carolena Purpura (Centerport/Harborfields) recorded her first career point with an assist.

Senior goalie Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) made a career-high eight saves for Cortland. Senior goalie Olivia Gretz (Elkridge, MD/Mount De Sales Academy) turned aside five shots and senior Allie Bianco (Allentown, PA/Parkland) contributed a defensive save for Misericordia.

Ettere gave Cortland the lead 7:07 into the game, scoring on a reverse stick shot inside the left post. She made it a 2-0 game with her team-high eighth goal of the season 5:20 into the second quarter with another shot inside the left post. The Cougars' best chance to score in the first half came with 2:57 on the clock, but McGuinness made a kick save on sophomore Olivia Kempf's (East Concord/Pioneer) bid from eight yards out. Just over a minute later, Pratt pushed Cortland's lead to 3-0 with a shot inside the post off a penalty corner.

The Cougars controlled much of the play in the third quarter, taking advantage of a five-minute yellow card on a Cortland player, but couldn't break through with a goal as McGuinness made four of her eight saves. Moments after the Red Dragon card expired, Misericordia picked up a two-minute green card and Cortland capitalized when Fox lifted a shot over Gretz on a penalty corner to make it a 4-0 game. Pratt finished off the scoring 4:32 into the fourth quarter, sending a long blast from the top of the circle through traffic inside the left post on a penalty corner for the 5-0 final.
