Cortland Builds Big Lead in Defeating William Smith, 5-3

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team opened up a 5-0 lead through three quarters and went on to earn a 5-3 victory versus William Smith Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 6-0 with the win, while the Herons fell to 3-3.

Freshman Jamie Snyder (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) led Cortland with two goals. Junior Lily Fox (Northport) and freshman Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) each recorded a goal and an assist, freshman Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) netted a goal and sophomore Madison Rice (Greene/Greene Central) added an assist. Senior goalie Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) made six saves.

Senior Elizabeth Jacobia (Amherst) scored twice for William Smith. Senior Anna Rider (Brunswick, ME) added a goal, and senior McKenna Williams (Rome/Holland Patent) and junior Mackenzie Wodka (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Kristen McCormick (Boston, MA/Dana Hall School) made six saves in 43:28 before giving way to senior Stephanie Stone (Northborough, MA/Algonquin), who stopped one shot over the final 16:32.

Ettere gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 6:25 into the game with her team-high ninth goal on a one-time shot in front. Corrigan pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 20:06 mark with a shot from a tough angle on the right side.

The Red Dragons used a three-goal third quarter to build their 5-0 lead. Fox scored off a short pass in front, and Snyder scored back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart.

The Herons controlled most of the play in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Red Dragons, 9-1 and holding a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners. Jacobia tallied William Smith's first goal 4:04 into the quarter with a one-time shot alone in front. Rider then slid a loose ball in front inside the left post at the 54:43 mark, and Jacobia finished off the scoring with her deflection in front on a penalty corner for the 5-3 final.
