#18 Red Dragons Earn 1-0 Win in 2OT at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. -- After more than 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Cortland senior Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East) scored his second goal of the season for a 1-0 non-conference victory at St. Lawrence Tuesday afternoon to extend the nationally 18th-ranked Red Dragons' unbeaten streak to seven games.

Sophomore Jack Coleman (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) assisted on the game-winning score for Cortland, now 6-1-1 on the season. Junior goalie Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) registered five saves in posting his second straight shutout for the Red Dragons. Goalie Ben Woelfinger turned aside 11 shots for the Saints (4-3).

Each team created early chances. Less than a minute into the game, St. Lawrence's Marvin Sibanda broke free in the middle of the box and one-timed a shot off a clean pass that Melveney deflected off the crossbar. The ball caromed back to Sibanda who headed a shot over the open goal. In the 13th minute, Woelfinger made a sprawling save on Cortland senior Ian Blugh's (Staten Island/Curtis) header off a corner kick.

In the second half, the Red Dragons put seven of their nine shots on goal, but Woelfinger was up to the task. Late in regulation, Da'Vaughn Anderson had two quality chances to break the scoreless tie for the Saints, but his initial shot was blocked with 26 seconds remaining and his follow-up shot was denied by Melveney with 18 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.

St. Lawrence outshot Cortland, 3-0, in the first 10-minute extra period but no shots were on goal. In the second overtime, the Saints generated five shots and narrowly missed scoring the game winner twice. In the 102nd minute, Robert Reynolds hit the post. Just over a minute later, Sibanda rang a shot off the post. The Cortland game-winning score came in the 106th minute. Graduate student Lukas Rubio (Liverpool) served a corner kick into the box where Coleman sent a header on goal that Woelfinger saved. Ruggiero followed up on the rebound and delivered the game winner for the 1-0 final.
