POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Senior
Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East) scored in the 78th minute to break a 1-1 tie as the nationally 18th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team opened SUNYAC play with a 2-1 victory at Potsdam Friday afternoon.
Freshman
Matt Shultz (Oneonta) also scored for the Red Dragons (7-1-1), and sophomore
Jason Lee (Middle Village/Xavier) collected two assists. Junior goalie
Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) turned aside two shots.
Logan Hinnerschietz tallied the goal for the Bears (2-4-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) with Zach Saddlemire assisting on the score. Goalie Conor Callan registered four saves.
Shultz gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 2:10 before halftime with his fourth goal of the season, but Hinnerschietz tied the game in the 74th minute. Just over four minutes later, Ruggiero notched the game winner with his third goal of the season, and the Red Dragons held on for the 2-1 win.
