CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team evened both its overall and SUNYAC record at 1-1 with a 7-2 victory over visiting Plattsburgh.
The Red Dragons opened with wins in two of the three doubles flights.
Logan Streety (Elma/Iruquois) and
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) outlasted Cydney Bond and Sarah Hoeffner at first doubles, 8-6, and
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) rang up an 8-3 win at second doubles. The Cardinals (1-1, 1-1 SUNYAC) earned a point with an 8-4 win by Bri Miller and Jacqueline Svantner at third doubles.
In singles action, Van Denburg won 6-3, 6-1 at third singles and
Preston Fuerbacher (Rochester/Fairport) won 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles to extend Cortland's lead to 4-1. Nicole Svantner kept Plattsburgh alive briefly with a 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth singles, but Cortland clinched the team victory with Streety's 6-3, 6-4 win at second singles.
Closing out the day, Madigan registered a 6-3, 6-0 win at the number one singles flight, and Bonapace won a hard-fought victory at number four. Bonapace won the first set against Jacqueline Svantner, 6-4, but Svantner won the second set, also by a 6-4 count. With the team decision already secured, the two played a super tiebreaker to 10 points in lieu of a third set, and Bonapace won that, 11-9, to pick up the win.
Cortland will continue SUNYAC play with road matches at Brockport on Friday at 3 p.m. and at Fredonia Saturday at 11 a.m.
