ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team opened up a 2-0 lead after three quarters and held on to defeat Rochester, 2-1, in a non-conference road game Wednesday night. The Red Dragons improved to 3-0 with the win. The Yellowjackets dropped their first game of the season and fell to 2-1.

Junior Lily Fox (Northport) and freshman Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) each contributed one goal and one assist for Cortland. Junior Elizabeth Pratt (Saratoga Springs) registered a defensive save, and senior goalie Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) turned aside four shots.

Amanda Strenk scored for Rochester with Nikki Mercer assisting on the goal. Goalie Abigail Walrond made eight saves.

Fox gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead 2:08 before the end of the first quarter, scoring from the middle of the circle for her first goal of the season. Ettere made it a 2-0 game with her sixth goal of the season, finding the back of the cage from 10 yards out after a penalty corner.

Strenk pulled the Yellowjackets to within 2-1 2:42 into the fourth quarter with a reverse-stick shot from five yards out. Pratt protected the Cortland lead with her defensive save less than two minutes later. Rochester had a final chance for the equalizer with a penalty corner with 35 seconds remaining but could not generate a shot as Cortland held on for the 2-1 victory.
