SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore men's hockey team scored a late second-period power-play goal to snap a 1-1 tie and held on for a 2-1 win versus Cortland in non-conference action Saturday night at the Saratoga City Rink. The Red Dragons dropped to 10-6-1 with their fifth one-goal setback of the season. The Thoroughbreds improved to 10-6-1.
Sophomore
Jona Hildreth (Lockport/Walpole Express) scored Cortland's goal off assists from senior
Shane Beaulieu (Port Perry, ON/Powassan VooDoos) and junior
Matt Jahn (Glen Allen, VA/Charlotte Rush). Junior
Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) started in goal for the Red Dragons, stopping 11 shots in 25:26 before giving way to senior
Owen Zdunski (Findley Lake/Chippewa Steel), who turned aside 10 shots in 33:56.
Freddie Ilias and Reid Russell netted goals for Skidmore. Everett Wardle recorded two assists, and Mike Gelatt added one assist. Goalie Blaine Moore made 19 saves.
Ilias gave Skidmore a 1-0 lead at 16:14 of the opening period with his second goal of the season. Hildreth tied the game at the 19:20 mark of the first period with his fifth goal of the campaign. Russell scored the game winner just 16 seconds before the end of the second period on the power play. The Red Dragons had a late power-play chance in the third period, but the Thoroughbreds successfully killed off the attempt. Cortland pulled Zdunski for an extra skater with 38 seconds remaining and nearly tied the game but junior
Nick Grupp's (Depew/Brantford 99ers) bid for the late equalizer hit the pipe as the Thoroughbreds held on for the 2-1 win.
