Cortland Extends Win Streak to 13 with 77-65 Triumph vs. Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. –Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) made a career-high four 3-pointers and scored a team-high 18 points, and Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) hit 7-of-8 shots, including all three of her 3-point attempts, in a 17-point effort as Cortland defeated visiting Oneonta, 77-65, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.

Cortland notched its 13th straight victory to improve to 14-2 overall and 10-0 in the SUNYAC. Oneonta fell to 10-9 overall and 7-5 in the conference.

Longford finished with four assists and four rebounds in addition to her 18 points. Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) joined Longford and Miedreich in double figures with 11 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds, and Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) tallied seven points.

Nadia Brown scored 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead Oneonta. Molly Stephens had 16 points and Olivia Dobrovosky led the team with 14 rebounds and three assists.

Much of Cortland's margin of victory was due to its shooting from 3-point range. Both teams made 27 field goals, with Cortland finishing the day at 47 percent and Oneonta at 44 percent. However, Cortland was 12-of-26 from 3-point range, while Oneonta hit only 2-of-15 from the arc.

Oneonta led 9-2 three minutes into the game, but the hosts came back and eventually took a 16-15 lead after one quarter on a Miedreich 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the period. Cortland slowly pulled away to take a 41-30 lead late in the second quarter and held a 41-32 halftime advantage.

Oneonta fought back from a 12-point deficit early in the third quarter and got as close as three at 46-43 on a Megan Palmatier free throw with 3:47 remaining. Cortland, however, closed the quarter on a 10-3 run, including treys by McGuire and Longford, to take a 56-46 lead into the fourth.

Cortland's largest lead was 70-54 with 5:30 left in the game following a Miedreich 3-pointer. Oneonta scored 11 of the next 13 point and trailed by seven with 2:47 remaining but was held scoreless the rest of the way.
