Cortland Suffers Non-League Setback at Scranton

SCRANTON, PA. – Scranton had five players score in double figures and committed only one turnover as the host Royals defeated Cortland, 91-58, in a non-league men's basketball game.
 
Stephen Braunstein paced Scranton (6-5) with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including four 3-pointers in six attempts. Jackson Danzig hit 6-of-11 shots and finished with 16 points and three steals and Jack Brockett scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Brockett was 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Will McLoughlin added 12 points (6-of-8 field goals) and also hauled in six rebounds, while Ryan Ems contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Jack Lambert led the Royals with four assists.
 
Cortland (5-6) was led by Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) with 28 points and 13 rebounds. He hit 11-of-19 shots from the floor and matched his career high with four 3-pointers in five tries. Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) finished with 14 points and six rebounds. He was 6-of-12 from the floor. Riley McEvoy (Homer) had three assists and Sean Melvin (Valhalla) and Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) each pulled down four rebounds.
 
Scranton finished the game shooting 56 percent from the floor overall and 54 percent (13-of24) from the 3-point line. Cortland shot 37 percent overall and 39 percent (9-of-23) from long distance.
 
Cortland trailed 14-13 with 13:25 left in the first half before Scranton went on a 15-3 run over the next five and a half minutes, capped by two Danzig dunks. The Red Dragons got back to within seven at 31-24 with 6:35 left on five points from Lubin and a Linehan 3-pointer, but Scranton took a 48-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
The hosts scored the first 10 points of the second half, including two Braunstein treys, to go up 58-34 with 17:26 remaining. Cortland pushed back to within 15 with 13:09 left, but Scranton scored 17 of the game's next 19 points to put the game out of reach.
