CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's soccer team opened up a 2-0 lead at the half and added three second-half goals in defeating Fredonia, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 6-3-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the conference. The Blue Devils dropped to 1-6-3 and 0-3-2.

Junior Jack Coleman (Newark Valley/Maine-Endwell) led the Cortland offense with two goals and one assist. Junior Mateo Marra (Ossining) tallied a goal and two assists, sophomore Logan Comfort (Cazenovia) scored his first career goal and added an assist and sophomore Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) scored a goal. Sophomores Cade Denlinger (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) and Muiz Bayewu (Lagos, Nigeria/Albany (NY)) each contributed an assist.

Freshman goalie Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) stopped two second-half shots in recording his second shutout of the season for the Red Dragons. Sophomore Tanner Stutzman (Hornell) started in goal for Fredonia, making six saves in 66:47. Junior Kyle Pezzulo Rochester/Greece Odyssey) registered one save over the final 23:13.

Coleman gave Cortland the lead in the 21st minute, one-touching a through ball from Marra inside the right post for his sixth goal of the season. Comfort then put the Red Dragons ahead 2-0 going into intermission with a rebound goal in the 36th minute after Stutzman denied an initial shot by Marra.

Fredonia created the first good scoring chance in the second half, but sophomore Kaleb Steward (Kennedy/Randolph) just missed wide left on a header off a free-kick serve in the 47th minute. The Red Dragons took over from that point. Marra scored his fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute with a bending shot into the upper right after a give-and-go with Coleman on a corner kick. Coleman's second goal of the game and team-high seventh of the season came in the 52nd minute on a blast from the right side of the box that found the upper right corner, putting the Red Dragons up, 4-0. Choukri completed the scoring in the 63rd minute, scoring off a pass from Bayewu from the middle of the box for the 5-0 final.
