GENESEO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team earned its first dual-match victory over perennial SUNYAC power Geneseo in 17 years with a 7-2 victory over the host Knights in conference action.
The Red Dragons upped their record to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in SUNYAC play while handing Geneseo (3-3, 3-1 SUNYAC) its first conference loss of the fall. Cortland will host Farmingdale State in a non-league match Sunday at noon.
Cortland's last win over Geneseo was an 8-1 home decision in 2005, and the Red Dragons' last win at Geneseo was an 8-1 triumph the previous year.
Cortland jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action.
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) and
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) cruised to an 8-1 win at third doubles and
Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) and
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) battled to an 8-6 decision at second doubles.
In singles action, Cortland earned victories from
Diana Kozenyatko (Liverpool) at number two, 6-4, 6-3, Streety at number three, 7-5, 6-3,
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) on the fourth flight, 6-3, 6-3, Cubino at number five, 6-4, 6-1, and
Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Alex Galle played a role in both of Geneseo's points. She teamed with Kylie Seiler to win at first doubles, 8-1, and was a 7-5, 6-3 victor at first singles.
