Cortland Defeats Farmingdale St., 8-1, on Senior Day

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team swept all six singles matches en route to an 8-1 non-league victory over visiting Farmingdale State. The Red Dragons improved their record to 5-3 with the win.

The Red Dragons led, 2-1, after doubles action. Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) earned an 8-5 win at first doubles and Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) and Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) won by an 8-2 count at third doubles. Madigan, Van Denburg and Bonapace were honored during the Red Dragons' "Senior Day" at the match (Morano also is listed as a senior on the roster, but has eligibility remaining after this year). Farmingdale (5-4) picked up its point on the afternoon when Amanda Jones and MacKenzie Gisler won, 8-5, at second doubles.

In singles play, Madigan won, 6-0, 6-3, on the first flight, Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at number three, Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) won, 6-0, 6-2, at fifth singles, and Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) was victorious, 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.

With the team outcome already determined, the second and fourth singles matches went to a 10-point super tiebreaker in place of a third set. In both cases, Cortland players finished off comeback wins. At number two, Diana Kozenyatko (Liverpool) won 2-6, 6-4, 10-6, and at number four Van Denburg won 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.

Cubino and (Emma) Madigan are both 7-1 in singles play this fall with their victories, while Streety and Van Denburg are each 5-3 on the year. Bonapace and Morano improved to 5-2 as a doubles unit with their victory (Bonapace is 6-2 overall in doubles action).

Cortland is scheduled for a non-league match Tuesday at Houghton and a SUNYAC match Wednesday at Oswego, both at 3 p.m.
