OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team earned its third straight victory with a 9-0 decision at Oswego in a SUNYAC match.
The Red Dragons improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in SUNYAC play. Cortland is currently in fourth place in the eight-team league standings with one match remaining – a make-up versus Fredonia that has not yet been rescheduled. The top four teams qualify for the conference tournament, which will be held next April in Binghamton.
Cortland won easily at second and third doubles, with
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) and
Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) winning, 8-2, at number two and
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) and
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) victorious, 8-1, at number three. At first doubles, the Red Dragons'
Abby Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) battled to an 8-6 victory over Oswego's Angelina Llanos and Alyx Sperling.
Five of Cortland's six singles wins were relatively easy straight-set decisions. Madigan won, 6-0, 6-1, at number one, Streety posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at number three, and Van Denburg was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number four. Cubino, at fifth singles, and
Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott), at sixth singles, each coasted to 6-0, 6-0 victories.
At second singles,
Diana Kozenyatko (Liverpool) went toe-to-toe with Sperling in the first set, with Kozenyatko coming away with a 7-6 win after posting an 8-6 tiebreaker victory. With the team result already decided, it was agreed upon that a super tiebreaker to 10 points would be played in place of a second set, and that if Sperling won that, another super tiebreaker would be played for the third set. Kozenyatko clinched the win after registering a 10-4 victory in the first super tiebreaker.
For the season thus far, Cubino and (Emma) Madigan are each 8-1 in singles play, while Streety and Van Denburg are each 6-3 and (Abby) Madigan is 5-4. Bonapace is 7-2 in doubles action, including a 6-2 mark with Morano as her partner. Cubino and Streety are 5-4 in doubles play.
