CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) scored with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter to lift Cortland past visiting New Paltz, 2-1, in a SUNYAC field hockey matchup.
With the win, Cortland (11-3, 5-1 SUNYAC) has secured the second seed for the four-team SUNYAC postseason tournament. The Red Dragons close the regular season with non-league games at Hartwick Wednesday and home versus Skidmore Saturday before hosting a SUNYAC tournament semifinal game on Nov. 2 versus either New Paltz or Oneonta. Geneseo is the top seed and will host a semifinal game, and the finals will be held Nov. 5 at the highest remaining seed.
Cortland broke a scoreless tie with 6:29 left in the third quarter when
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) took a shot that
Jamie Snyder (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) redirected into the cage. The goal was Snyder's ninth goal of the fall. The Hawks, however, responded just 38 seconds later to tie the game. Cortland goalie
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) saved a shot but Rachel Tama controlled the rebound and lifted the ball into the goal with a reverse stick for her fourth goal of the season.
Cortland's winning goal was set up by Corrigan's second assist of the game. She sent a long pass to an open Ettere in the circle. New Paltz goalie Davin Testo charged out in an attempt to break up the play, but Ettere dribbled around the diving Testo and blasted in a shot from about nine yards away for her team-high 12th goal of the season. The goal came despite Cortland playing down one player at the time due to a yellow card.
Morgan and Testo each finished with four saves. Cortland finished with a slight 11-7 edge in shots despite being held to no shots in the first quarter and only two shots before halftime. The Red Dragons earned six penalty corners to New Paltz's four.
