BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Four different players scored goals as the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team claimed the top seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament with a 4-1 win at Brockport Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 12-4-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 8-3-5 and 6-2-1 and earned the fourth seed.
Cortland hosts the winner of the four seed versus fifth seed in a semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at a time to be determined.
Junior
AJ Ali (Rochester/Brighton) tallied a goal and an assist for the Red Dragons. Seniors
Riley Williams (Watertown/South Jefferson) and
Francesco Galvano (Pearl River) and sophomore
Cade Denlinger (Elizabethtown, PA/ Elizabethtown Area) each netted a goal. Junior
Jack Coleman (Newark Valley/Maine-Endwell) added two assists. Freshman goalie
Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) made two saves.
Dylan Rippe scored Brockport's goal. Andrew Taylor started in goal, making seven saves in 82:32. Goalie Ryan Gall stopped the only shot he faced on goal over the final 7:28.
Williams gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, but Rippe scored the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Galvano followed with the game winner, his first career Cortland goal, in the 44th minute.
Denlinger made it a 3-1 game in the 75th minute before Ali completed the scoring in the 83rd minute for the 4-1 final.
