Red Dragons Fall to Skidmore, 3-2, in OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. –  Senior Morgan Sickels (O'Fallon, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) scored 5 minutes, 38 seconds into overtime to lift the Skidmore field hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Cortland Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons dropped to 12-4, while the Thoroughbreds improved to 12-8.

Junior Sidney DeMagistris (Gloversville) and sophomore Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) scored goals for Cortland. Senior Lily Fox (Northport) and sophomore Jamie Snyder (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) each collected an assist. Freshman Alaina Telenko (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) made five saves in her first career start in goal.

Senior Carrie Hughes (Kansas City, MO/Pembroke Hill) led Skidmore with two goals and an assist. Sophomores CC Wetter (Southampton) and Kayla Hassett (Massapequa) each recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie Victoria Bodnar (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) turned aside 10 shots, and freshman Brooke Golden (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) registered a defensive save.

Hughes gave the Thoroughbreds a quick 2-0 lead, scoring her 22nd and 23rd goals of the season. She opened the scoring at the 3:04 mark, knocking in a short pass from Wetter deep in the circle on a scramble in front. Hughes notched her second goal of the game just under two minutes later with a deflection inside the right post of a long pass from Hassett.

Ettere cut Cortland's deficit to 2-1 at the midway point of the second quarter, one-timing a touch pass from Snyder into the open goal for her team-high 14th goal of the season. The Red Dragons continued to press, taking nine second-quarter shots, but Bodnar finished the quarter with six saves to keep Skidmore in front, 2-1, at the half.

DeMagistris scored the equalizer just 52 seconds before the end of the third quarter. Freshman Molly Miller (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) fed a pass ahead to Fox who blasted a shot toward the cage. Bodnar charged off her line, but DeMagistris deflected the ball between Bodnar's pads for her third goal of the season.

After a scoreless fourth quarter in which Telenko made three of her five saves, Cortland was issued a five-minute yellow card just 1:56 into overtime. Despite being down a player, the Red Dragons earned three penalty corners but could not capitalize. Sickels scored the game winner on a quick counter after Skidmore forced a turnover, deflecting in a pass from Hughes at the right post for the 3-2 final.
