CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team advanced to the championship game of the SUNYAC playoffs with a 2-1 win over visiting Oneonta in a semifinal matchup Wednesday.
Cortland (13-4), the second seed in the four-team tournament, will travel to top-seeded Geneseo for the finals Saturday at 1 p.m. Geneseo defeated fourth-seeded New Paltz, 4-2, in the semifinals Wednesday at Geneseo. Oneonta, the third seed, closes the season with a 7-10 record.
Elizabeth Pratt (Saratoga Springs) broke a 1-1 tie with an unassisted goal after a rebound with 8:23 left in the first half. Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter when
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) scored on a shot just inside the circle during a penalty corner play, assisted by both
Lily Fox (Northport) and Pratt. Oneonta tied the game 3:02 into the second quarter on a goal from Michaela Maniscalco off a pass from Claire Mahoney.
Cortland dominated the game statistically with a 32-2 advantage in shots and a 27-2 lead in penalty corners. Oneonta, however, stayed close behind the play of goalie Jennifer Tumino, who made 16 saves, and Oneonta defender Carly Waszczak, who registered two defensive saves. Cortland goalie
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) did not make any saves in the victory.
Cortland will be making its fifth straight SUNYAC finals appearance. The Red Dragons won the 2017 league title at home and lost on the road in the championship game at New Paltz in 2018 and 2021 and at Geneseo in overtime in 2019 (the 2020 season was canceled).
