POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Leilani Llamas scored three minutes, 42 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Vassar field hockey team to a 2-1 victory versus nationally 20th-ranked Cortland Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons dropped to 6-3 with the setback, while the Brewers improved to 7-3 with the win.
Sophomore
Sydney Reinisch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored Cortland's goal with sophomore
Jamie Snyder (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) assisting. Freshman goalie
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) registered three saves.
Maggie Werner also scored a goal for Vassar, and Ella Pearl collected an assist. Goalie Sarah Dumaresq made three saves.
Werner gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead 2:52 into the second quarter off an assist from Pearl. That goal held up until Reinisch evened the game at 1-1 with just 3:26 remaining in regulation to force overtime.
In the first 10-minute extra session, the Red Dragons went down a player with a five-minute yellow card just past the halfway point but still held a 4-2 shot advantage as each goalie registered two saves. Early in the second overtime, Cortland was unable to clear the ball out of its defensive third as Vassar forced a turnover. Llamas possessed the ball near the top of the circle, spun and blasted a long shot through traffic for the game winner and the 2-1 victory.
