Cortland Blanks Visiting Oswego, 5-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Jamie Snyder (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored twice and Carolena Purpura (Centerport/Harborfields) registered a goal and an assist as the nationally 20th-ranked Cortland field hockey team shut out visiting Oswego, 5-0, in a SUNYAC contest.

Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) and Elizabeth Pratt (Saratoga Springs) also scored for the Red Dragons (7-3, 2-1 SUNYAC). Cortland outshot the Lakers, 26-4, and had a 7-4 edge in penalty corners. Oswego goalie Erica Scheblein made 14 saves, with Megan Delaney adding a defensive save. Cortland goalie Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) did not have to record any saves for the shutout, while Pratt made a defensive save.

Ettere opened the scoring 1:51 into the second quarter when she converted a crossing pass from Purpura from the right side for her seventh goal of the season. Purpura made it 2-0 with 4:49 left in the half when she lifted a shot from the left side into the upper right of the cage for her first goal of the fall.

Snyder struck twice in the first six minutes of the third quarter to extend the lead to 4-0. She dribbled in toward the cage on the left endline and put home a short shot 33 seconds into the period, and she knocked home a rebound after Delaney's defensive save 5:57 into the quarter. Snyder has six goals this season. Pratt finished the scoring with her first goal of the year as she blasted home a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner insert pass from Madison Rice (Greene).

Oswego's best scoring opportunity came late in the third quarter. During a penalty corner, Kaitlyn Mastracco took a shot from the top of the circle that ricocheted off the left post. After a battle for the rebound, a shot by Kate McNally was poked away near the goal line by Pratt.
