BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's soccer team scored three second-half goals in defeating Buffalo St., 3-0, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play on the road. The Red Dragons improved to 8-3-2 overall and 3-0-2 in the conference, while the Bengals fell to 3-5-4 and 0-3-1.
Juniors
Mateo Marra (Ossining) and
Alex Lessman (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) and sophomore
Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) each scored a goal for Cortland. Junior A.J. Ali (Rochester/Brighton) and sophomores
Matt Shultz (Oneonta) and
Cade Denlinger (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) collected one assist apiece.
Freshman goalie
Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) made five saves in posting his third consecutive shutout for the Red Dragons. Goalie Shae Wirt stopped six shots for the Bengals.
After a scoreless first half, Marra scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 54th minute with a left-footed shot under the crossbar after receiving a pass from Shultz, his seventh goal of the season. Lessman added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute, scoring on a header off a corner kick serve from Denlinger. Choukri completed the scoring in the 88th minute with his fourth goal of the season, finishing off a quick give-and-go with Ali for the 3-0 final.
