Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#20 Red Dragons Advance to SUNYAC Finals with 2-0 Win vs. Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 20th-ranked and top-seeded Cortland women's soccer team scored two goals in the second of two mandatory 10-minute overtimes and earned a 2-0 victory versus fifth-seeded Oswego Wednesday afternoon in the SUNYAC Semifinals. The Red Dragons improved to 13-1-3 overall and will host second-seeded Geneseo in the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m.

Juniors Simone Neivel (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored the goals for Cortland. Sophomore goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) made seven saves in posting the shutout. Sophomore goalie Perri Anderson (Cornwall/Cornwall Local) registered four saves for the Lakers (9-6-4).

The Red Dragons generated the best chance in the first half, but Anderson charged off her line and made a stop deep in the box on graduate student Jayden Kelley's (East Berne/Voorheesville) bid in the 39th minute.

Oswego created the first two good scoring chances in the second half. In the 50th minute, Spendal punched a lofted 25-yard shot by graduate student Graisa Madden (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) over the crossbar. Spendal then denied a shot by graduate student Maggie Riordan (New City/Clarkstown North) alone in the box in the 78th minute. Two minutes later, Cortland graduate student Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) hit the left post with her shot from the right side and the game went into overtime.

In the first 10-minute period, the Red Dragons held a 2-0 shot advantage with Anderson having to make a save on an 18-yard shot by Galluzzo in the 93rd minute. Oswego nearly took the lead in the 103rd minute, but sophomore Katie Delgrosso's (Pearl River) shot from 20 yards out hit the crossbar and caromed away from danger.

Three minutes later, Neivel struck for the game winner. She intercepted an errant back pass by a Laker just inside Cortland's half of the field, carried toward the right elbow of the 18-yard box and deposited a low shot inside the left post for her seventh goal of the season. With Oswego pushing up late looking for the equalizer, Allen sealed the 2-0 win when she gathered a loose ball in Cortland's defensive half. She broke in alone on Anderson who was well out of her goal, made a move around her and tucked a shot into the open goal with six seconds remaining in the game.
