Red Dragons Rally for 4-3 OT Win at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) scored two minutes, 58 seconds into overtime to lift the Cortland men's hockey team to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory at Morrisville Wednesday night in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 5-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the conference (8 points), while the Mustangs dropped to 3-5 and 1-4 (3 points).

Juniors Liam Anderson (East York, ON/Pickering Panthers) and Nate Berke (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and sophomore Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) each added goals for Cortland. Junior Cameron Knowlton (Kenai, AK/Charlotte Rush) recorded two assists, and senior Nick Grupp (Depew/Brantford 99ers), junior Geordan Buffoline (Ballston Spa/Vermont Lumberjacks) and sophomore Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) collected one assist apiece. Senior goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) made 22 saves.

Curtis Abbott scored twice for Morrisville. Cameron Clark netted a goal, while Jestin Somero and Chris Mott each picked up two assists and Trevor Grasby and Domenic Della Civita contributed an assist. Goalie Ryan Creenan stopped 33 shots.

Bernardo gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 16:12 of the first period, deflecting a shot past Creenan after Grupp made an end-to-end rush with the puck. Abbott tied the game just over a minute later with a slap shot from the right circle.

Clark put the Mustangs ahead, 2-1, at the 6:18 mark of the second period with a wrist shot from the left circle, but Anderson answered for Cortland with a goal from the left circle just 76 seconds later.

Abbott's second goal, a shot from the slot after a Cortland turnover in its defensive zone, at 10:16 of the third period put Morrisville up, 3-2. Late in the period, the Red Dragons killed off a two-man disadvantage for 1:18 and returned to even strength with 30 seconds left in regulation. After an icing call on the Mustangs, Cortland pulled Durante for an extra skater. The Red Dragons won the ensuing faceoff, and Berke scored on a slap shot from the right point with nine seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

With the teams skating three aside, Cortland forced a turnover in the neutral zone. Knowlton possessed the puck and skated in with Settimo on a 2-on-0. Knowlton fed a pass to his left to Settimo who sent a shot past Creenan for the game winner and the 4-3 final.
