Cortland Falls to No. 2/4 Christopher Newport to Begin Puerto Rico Trip

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – The Cortland women's basketball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped as the Red Dragons fell to unbeaten and nationally ranked Christopher Newport, 89-49, in the Puerto Rico Clasico at the Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez.
 
Cortland (8-2), which is the fourth-highest "others receiving votes" team in the latest D3hoops.com poll, will wrap up its two-game Puerto Rico trip on Tuesday at 5 p.m. (4 p.m. Eastern) versus Dickinson College (Pa.) at Coliseo Roberto Clemente.
 
Christopher Newport (11-0), ranked second in Division III by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and fourth nationally by D3hoops.com, raced out to a 32-6 lead after one quarter and was up 55-20 at halftime. The margin grew to 40 points after three quarter, and the teams played an even 16-16 fourth quarter. The Captains entered the game averaging 90.9 points per game and allowing only 45.2 points per contest.
 
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) led Cortland with 13 points. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds, Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) finished with seven points and three rebounds, and Fiona Mullen (Orangeburg/Tappan Zee) paced the Red Dragons with five assists.
 
Sondra Fan led CNU with 22 points, all in the first half. She finished 8-for-11 from the field, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Camille Malagar scored 11 points and Gabbi San Diego totaled 10 points.
 
CNU shot 63 percent from the field in the first quarter and finished the game at 52 percent overall. The Captains hit 12-of-25 shots from the 3-point arc and were 21-of-32 from the foul line. Cortland was held to 28 percent shooting overall and 3-of-21 from 3-point range.
