CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's swimming and diving team finished first out of seven schools at the two-day Snow Flurries Invitational, hosted by the Red Dragons Friday and Saturday at Holsten Pool.
Cortland won with a score of 1,019.5 points. Oneonta was the runner-up with 657.5 points, followed by Buffalo State at 553.5 and Fredonia at 447.5. Colby-Sawyer (338), Potsdam (274) and Jamestown Community College (198) rounded out the field.
Leah Bernhardt (Groton) earned three of Cortland's eight individual victories at the meet. She won the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.40), the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.23) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:22.18).
Madi Monaghan (Chili/Gates Chili) took top honors in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.62),
Evelyn Currier (Waterford/Shenendehowa) won the 400-yard IM (5:10.15) and
Areiannah Martinez-Reyes (Queens/Benjamin Cardozo) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.16).
Nicole Bellettiere (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) won the 3-meter diving competition with 379.30 points.
Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was the 1-meter champion with 383.80 points and placed third on the 3-meter board (356.85).
Adriane Casey (West Islip) was runner-up on both boards with scores of 367.15 points in the 3-meter event and 374.10 points on 1-meter.
Cortland won two relays.
Kaila O'Hara (East Islip),
Sophie Amering (Rochester/Hilton),
Emily Lantry (Massena/St. Lawrence) and Bernhardt won the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:25.40), while Lantry,
Alayna Miller (Hilton), Bernhardt and
Julia Bryce (Rochester/School of the Arts) won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:50.66). The Red Dragons also had four relay runner-up showings. Martinez-Reyes, Dickman, Bryce and Miller were second in both the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.10) and the 400-yard medley relay (4:19.83). Bryce,
Sophia Boccio (Garden City), Bernhardt and Miller were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.34), and Monaghan, Martinez-Reyes, O'Hara and
Caitlin Elsasser (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) were runner-up in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:56.00).
Miller finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (57.39) and tied for second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.42). Elsasser was second in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.90) and 400-yard IM (5:15.24), Bryce placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.57) and third in the 200-yard IM (2:21.10) and Dickman was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.87). Amering finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.96) and 1,650-yard freestyle (19:39.14), and Lantry finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:35.01).
Cortland's next competition will be the RPI Invitational on January 14.
