Grupp for the Task; Cortland Defeats Morrisville, 3-2 in OT

MORRISVILLE N.Y. – Junior Nick Grupp (Depew/Brantford 99ers) scored an unassisted goal 3:32 into overtime to lift the Cortland men's hockey team to an important 3-2 victory at Morrisville St. Saturday night in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons improved to 12-9-2 overall and 7-5-2 (23 points) in the conference and moved into fourth place in the league standings. The Mustangs fell to 7-13-2 and 2-11 (6 points).

Freshman Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/PAL Junior Islanders) added a pair of power-play goals for Cortland. Senior Michael Sciore (Syracuse/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) collected two assists, and junior Matt Jahn (Glen Allen, VA/Charlotte Rush) contributed an assist. Junior goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) registered 19 saves.

Cameron Clark and Jensen Dodge scored goals for Morrisville St. Noah Holm, Luca Esposito, Richard Hart and Brett Tibbs recorded assists. Goalie Garrett Boyonoski turned aside 38 shots.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead at 12:28 of the first period on Clark's power-play goal. Facchini's first goal of the night at 11:45 of the second period tied the game before Dodge put Morrisville St. ahead, 2-1, three minutes, 10 seconds later. Facchini tied the game with his second goal of the game and third of the season at 18:04, sending the game to the third period even at 2-2.

In the scoreless third period, the Mustangs had three power-play chances, including one with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, while Cortland had one opportunity. Neither team could capitalize on the man-up advantages and the game went into overtime. The Red Dragons had the first two shots on goal in the extra period followed by one shot by the Mustangs. Grupp scored the game winner with 1:28 remaining in overtime to give Cortland the 3-2 victory.
