BUFFALO, N.Y. – The quartet of
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled),
Mason Arnberg (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East),
Ethan Domanico (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) and
Sam Zani (Rochester/Irondequoit) won the 200-yard medley relay to highlight Cortland's performances during the second full day of competition at the 2022 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland strengthened its hold on second place in the nine-school team standings with one day of competition remaining. Geneseo leads with 767 points, followed by Cortland at 452, New Paltz at 275, Oswego at 250 and Oneonta at 223. Potsdam (198), Brockport (153), Buffalo St. (134) and Fredonia (88) round out the field. Action concludes Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Poli, Arnberg, Domanico and Zani won the 200-yard medley crown in 1:34.79, just more than eight tenths of a second ahead of runner-up New Paltz. Poli posted a time of 25.09 seconds in the backstroke leg, Arnberg was clocked at 25.92 seconds in the breaststroke leg, Domanico covered the butterfly portion in 22.86 seconds, and Zani swam the freestyle leg in 20.92 seconds.
Poli also posted an all-conference effort with his third-place time of 53.34 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke. The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
Cortland earned 11 other spots in "A" finals during Friday's action.
Josh Chamak (New City/Clarkstown North) was fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:16.88), with Poli in seventh (4:25.57, 4:21.04 prelims) and
Jack Pagel (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) in eighth (4:26.73).
Danny Swift (Millerton/Webutuck) placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (52.15), while
Jake Bogen (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) was seventh (53.03, 52.91 prelims) and Zani placed eighth (53.59, 53.14 prelims).
In the 200-yard freestyle, Domanico finished in fifth place (1:44.61),
Nick Dambra (Brockport) was sixth (1:46.72, 1:46.19 prelims), and
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central) was seventh (1:47.07, 1:45.44 prelims). Arnberg finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.59) and
Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was sixth in 1-meter diving (438.60 points).
In the "B" finals,
Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) and
Patrick Kivlehan (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) finished 10th (1:46.79) and 14th (1:49.58, 1:49.35 prelims), respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle.
Aiden Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) was 10th in the 100-yard backstroke (55.96, 55.41 prelims), followed by Bogen in 15th place (57.33), and
Ryan Lerner (Washingtonville) was 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.76).
Alex Hilldale (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) qualified for the "B" finals in the 100 backstroke with a prelim time of 55.93 seconds but was disqualified in the finals.
