Cortland Secures Fourth Place in SUNYAC with 3-1 Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming SUNYAC tournament with a 3-1 victory at Fredonia Saturday night at Steele Hall. The Red Dragons finished the regular season with a 14-9-2 overall record and a 9-5-2 mark (29 points) in the conference. The Blue Devils dropped to 10-10-1 and 8-8 (24 points). The two teams will meet in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. in Cortland.

Senior Dorian Overland (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs), sophomore Jona Hildreth (Lockport/Walpole Express) and freshman Andrew Clifford (Gloversville/New Hampshire Avalanche) each scored goals for Cortland with Clifford's goal being the first of his career. Graduate student Alex Storjohann (Phoenix, AZ/Kirkland Lake), senior Jacob Gaydos (Sandusky, OH/Wisconsin Rapid Riverkings), sophomore Billy McDevitt (Livonia/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) and freshman Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/PAL Junior Islanders) collected one assist apiece. Junior goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) turned aside 37 shots in raising his season record to 12-5-2.

Johnny Malandruccolo scored Fredonia's goal with Antonio Demacopoulos and Johan Zollner assisting. Goalie Logan Dyck made 38 saves.

After a scoreless first period, Clifford gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 2:49 of the second period. Overland made it a 2-0 score at the 9:51 mark of the period. Malandruccolo pulled the Blue Devils to within 2-1 at 11:11 of the third period. Fredonia pulled Dyck for an extra skater late in the period, but Hildreth sealed the 3-1 win with an empty-net goal with 2.2 seconds remaining.
