Cortland Advances to SUNYAC Semifinals with a 5-1 Win vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team scored three third-period goals in defeating Fredonia, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the 2022 SUNYAC Men's Hockey Tournament Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 15-9-2 and advance to face Oswego on the road in the semifinals on Wednesday. The Blue Devils ended their season at 10-11-1.

Senior Ethan Homitz (Allison Park, PA/New Hampshire Monarchs) and sophomore Cameron Knowlton (Kenai, AK/Charlotte Rush) each recorded a goal and an assist for Cortland. Graduate student Alex Storjohann (Phoenix, AZ/Kirkland Lake), junior Matt Jahn (Glen Allen, VA/Charlotte Rush) and freshman Andrew Clouden (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans) added goals. Senior Michael Sciore (Syracuse/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) collected two assists. and junior Nick Grupp (Depew/Brantford 99ers) and freshman Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/PAL Junior Islanders) chipped in with one assist apiece. Junior goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) turned aside 39 shots.

Sophomore David Sudbrink (Nolensville, TN/Ogden Mustangs) netted Fredonia's goal with sophomore Jake Blackwell (Hamden, CT/Boston Rangers) and freshman Ryan Bailey (Anchorage, AK/Boston Jr. Rangers) picking assists. Sophomore goalie Logan Dyck (Calgary, AB/Notre Dame Hounds) made 31 saves.

Storjohann gave Cortland a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal from the right side at 8:58 of the opening period. Sudbrink tied the game at 19:21 on a loose puck in front with the man advantage.

Jahn scored what proved to be the game winner at 10:54 of the second period with a wrist shot through traffic from the right circle. Knowlton made it a 3-1 game at 11:12 of the third period on a deflection in front. Fredonia pulled Dyck late for an extra skater, but Clouden scored an short-handed empty-net goal at 18:37 and Homitz completed the scoring with an empty-net goal at 19:27 for the 5-1 final.
