Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Red Dragons Fall Short in 3-1 Setback vs. #2 Plattsburgh

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The nationally second-ranked Plattsburgh women's ice hockey team scored three straight goals in earning a 3-1 win against Cortland Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at the Upstate Medical University Arena in Syracuse. The Red Dragons dropped to 13-4-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the league. The Cardinals improved to 17-2-1 and 12-0-1.

Sophomore Jillian Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) notched her third goal of the season for Cortland. Freshman Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) assisted on the goal. Freshman goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) turned aside 27 shots.

Graduate student Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, PA/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) netted two goals to lead Plattsburgh. Sophomore Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, IL/NAHA) added a goal, and graduate student Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls/Buffalo Bisons), seniors Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, MI/Northern Cyclones) and Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, WI/East Coast Wizards) and freshman Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, PA/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) each chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, CO/Ontario Hockey Academy) made 23 saves.

Cortland opened the scoring at 8:46 of the first period when Jillian Hlasnick scored on a one-time shot in the slot off a pass from the right side from her sister Mia Hlasnick. The lead held until very early into the second period. Shortly after the opening faceoff, Katonka scored right in front on a one timer 11 seconds into the period to even the game at 1-1.

Katonka scored what proved to be the game winner at 17:21 of the second period on an unassisted effort just as a Cortland power play ended. The Red Dragons took a penalty on the goal to give the Cardinals a power-play chance, but Plattsburgh was whistled for back-to-back penalties late in the period eventually giving Cortland a two-player advantage for 58 seconds. The Red Dragons were unable to capitalize, and the Cardinals maintained their 2-1 lead.

Cortland had another power-play opportunity just before the midway point of the third period but could not score the equalizer. Less than two minutes after the penalty expired, Oshansky added an insurance goal on a rebound from the left side. The Red Dragons pulled Goergen for an extra skater with 38 seconds on the clock and maintained possession in the Plattsburgh defensive zone, but couldn't cut into their deficit as the Cardinals clinched the 3-1 victory.
