CLERMONT, FLA. – The Cortland softball team opened its 2022 season with a pair of losses at THE Spring Games, falling 8-0 in six innings to Concordia College of Wisconsin and 13-5 in five innings to Ramapo College.
The Red Dragons, who are slated to play 10 games while in Florida, return to action Monday with games versus William Paterson at 10:15 a.m. and Wesleyan University of Connecticut at 3:15 p.m.
Concordia (Wis.) 8, Cortland 0 (5 inn.)
Cortland fell victim to the pitching of Concordia's Nicki Becker, who tossed a six-inning perfect game with 10 strikeouts. The Falcons (8-1) scored twice in the first on a Claudia Utz two-run double, added a run in the third on Jess Pozezinski's RBI single, and another in the fourth on a Gabbi Gaziano leadoff double and a one-out RBI groundout by Madi Wheat.
Concordia made it 5-0 in the top of the fifth on a Pozezinski solo homer, and the Falcons tacked on three runs in the sixth on a Sydney Erdmann RBI double, an Utz RBI double and a Kelsey Bollon RBI groundout. The game was called after the bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule.
Utz, Pozezinski and Erdmann each finished with two of the Falcons' eight hits. Cortland starter
Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) struck out three batters over the first five innings and
Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) fanned two batters in the sixth.
Ramapo 13, Cortland 5 (5 inn.)
Cortland cut a 4-0 deficit after two innings to 4-3 entering the bottom of the fourth, but the Roadrunners (3-0) scored three times in the fourth to go up 7-3. The Red Dragons hung tight with two in the top of the fifth, but Ramapo exploded for six in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the eight-run rule.
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Red Dragons. She hit her first collegiate homer – a two-run shot in the fifth – and had an RBI double in the third.
Cortland's two-run third started when
Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) RBI groundout.
Tori Reich (Cornwall) and Barry followed with back-to-back doubles. Cortland's run in the fourth was the result of a
Renee Santos (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) leadoff double, a one-out wild pitch, and a two-out error. Meyers singled in the fifth and scored on Barry's homer, a deep blast to left center.
Alexis Corra was 3-for-4 with five RBI, including a grand slam as part of the six-run fifth inning, for Ramapo. Katie Rygiel was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Anna Messina finished 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI, and Carli Egan went 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs as the Roadrunners finished with 15 hits.
Sara Cappetti started for Ramapo but was pulled in the third inning after allowing two runs on four hits. Mahogany Wheeler pitched the final two and two thirds innings for the win. She gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits with two strikeouts. Cortland starter
Lindsey Richards (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) gave up seven runs, six earned, in four innings and took the loss.
